Found from Pakistan and N India to Nepal, W China and Mongolia. Not rare but high altitudes and rugged terrain make it hard to find. Also found in some of the former Soviet Union (Kirghizia and Tadzhikistan). Over 30 subspecies have been described, with more on the way.
