Common and widespread from E Canada and most of the  USA east of the Rockies to N Peru (in mountains).  Northern populations are more yellow and less orange. P coloro probably represents a race from the desert SW of the USA rather than a full species. The race from ecuador (sadala) has been found to have an interesting genetic makeup suggesting it may be an ancestral race (Tyler, Brown et al.)
