Restricted to low elevation rain forest in the western Amazon. Not at all common and rare in collections. Two subspecies include the very rare steinbachi from Bolivia and SW Brasil, and kuhlmani (even rarer) in SE Peru (range overlaps with pizarro and steinbachi - intergrade forms are frequent).
