Quite common from India through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam
and S China, the Malay peninsula, and W Indonesia (Java and Sumatra). Many
subspecies have been described, from various mountains and islands in its
range - often very hard to distinguish from one another. Ssp tamilana
(S India), the largest of the paris subspecies, is protected in
India.
