Papilio diazi (Racheli & Sbordoni, 1975)

Tepotztlan, Morelos, Mexico, 1975 recto same specimen verso
Tepotztlan, Morelos, Mexico, Nov 1 1965  FEMALE

Very rarely seen and poorly known, diazi is felt by some experts to be of hybrid origen: Papilio menatius morelius and Papilio garamas garamas (both illustrated below) though this has been questioned recently. DNA studies would be interesting to perform. My personal opinion is that it is merely a rare tailed morph of morelius, as most subspecies of Papilio menatius have been found to be somewhat polymorphic.
