Papilio chiansiades (Westwood, 1872)

Iquitos, Peru; 12/97

Generally local and uncommon, chiansiades is found in deep forests throughout the Amazon basin. The subspecies  listed here have been considered by many to be full species, but are so poorly known at the moment that nothing can be said for certain. I follow the nomenclature of Tyler, Brown et.al. The nominate race shown above is found throughout much of the western Amazon.
dospassossi - Putomayo River basin, very few specimens known (perhaps only the type specimen?)
maroni - Guianas and NE Amazon. rare, perhaps threatened
mossi - Eastern Amazon west to Rio Madiera
