Locally abundant throughout New Guinea and part of
NE Australia. Frequents gardens and scrubland, often along streams. A few
subspecies have been described including:
ambrax - Papua New Guinea
akameas - Fergusen Islands
lutosa - Arfak Mountains
dunali - Woodlark Is
ambracia - Waigeou
others from Misool, Yapen, Biak, Aru, and Darnley Islands
